Calanus AS shall harvest Calanus finmarchicus and related species and develop, manufacture and market value-added products based on marine zooplankton.
On a foundation of scientific documentation and technological know-how, Calanus AS shall spearhead industrial development based on ecologically sustainable harvesting of Calanus spp. and be in the forefront of the development of commercially interesting health- and nutrition products that can be derived thereof.
The marine zooplankton Calanus finmarchicus is a free-living copepod (crustacean) which is the key food source for most of the commercially important fish species in the North Atlantic. However, in the North Atlantic ecosystem only 10-20% of the vast biomass of Calanus finmarchicus is being incorporated in organisms higher up in the food chain.
The annual biomass-production of Calanus finmarchicus and closely related species in the Norwegian Sea and adjacent oceans is in the range of 200-400 million tons.
The difference between wild and farmed salmon production was successfully profiled and differentiated by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-ToF MS) combined with chemometric analysis. The established method based on multivariate analysis mainly involved principal component analysis (PCA),The Norwegian-based company Zooca® has created a revolutionary bio marine value chain focused on the sustainable harvesting of Calanus finmarchicus, the largest renewable animal resource in the Norwegian Sea.
