Carrefour France announced that, since last December, its suppliers of fresh fish and frozen fish that it markets under its own brand have committed to not using the pulse fishing method.
Despite pulse fishing was banned in 1998 in Europe, the method has been used for experimental purposes since 2007, by means of applying derogations.
Carrefour remembers that last November, the European Parliament's Committee on Fisheries favoured a decision that an extensive use of this method could be possible.
However, the French retailer notes that, based on the available data on the impacts of pulse fishing, it is in favor of applying the precautionary principle.
