The Humane Stunner Universal reduces fish stress.
From Farm to Fork – How Can Fish Slaughter Become More Humane?
(UNITED KINGDOM, 7/12/2020)
Seafood as we know it, goes through a journey before it can be served on a plate. During a fish’s journey, there’s opportunity for stress through multiple stages of fish production; predators, storms, infections, and feed are all factors that could increase the stress levels in fish. The final stage – the slaughtering process – can undoubtedly be a stressful process for fish, but it doesn’t need to be.
The Humane Stunner Universal works in factories, boats or barges and can handle any tonnage of any species.
Ace Aquatec has created the Humane Stunner Universal (HSU) which consists of a water-filled pipe, lined with electrodes, which render the fish unconscious without removing them from water. This innovation reduces fish stress, improves flesh quality and can double the volume of fish processed per hour. By stunning fish while they are still in water, the Humane Stunner Universal renders the fish unconscious, allowing them to remain unaware, and unstressed until death.
HSU Key Features
Highest possible welfare standards
Increase fish quality and shelf life
Increase your harvest rate
Improve staff safety
Fish stunned in less than one second
Can stun any species
The HSU can process up to 200 tonnes per hour while improving fish welfare and quality.
You can integrate the HSU in-water electric stunner into your existing harvesting process and vastly reduce fish stress and human handling – with no compromise on quality. Use the same system for all species and process up to 100 tonnes per hour.
Years of research led to a new kind of flexible electronics system that actively protects against spine damage and blood spotting. The system delivers precisely calibrated voltages without removing fish from the water, unlike dry-electric stunners.
Last year, Ace Aquatec won the Global Aquaculture Alliance Innovation Award at the GAA’s GOAL conference for the animal welfare benefits of its in-water electric stunner: the Humane Stunner Universal.
About Ace Aquatec
Ace Aquatec partners with world leading experts in different scientific fields to apply breakthrough technological developments to aquaculture and marine industries.
The company was co-founded in 1999 by inventor John Ace Hopkins and investor Annette Pyne-Carter after they saw the potential technological innovation could have in accelerating the adoption of responsible fish farming practices.
From the company's head office in Dundee, Scotland, Ace Aquatec project manages global R&D projects, manufacturing at two UK factories, and co-ordinate its installers and engineers worldwide. It also has a Canadian office and distribution partners in key markets.
