Carrefour also stops selling pangasius in Spain
(SPAIN, 2/1/2017)
Carrefour distribution chain will stop selling pangasius in its hypermarkets and supermarkets in Spain, in line with the decision taken by the French group in other European countries, such as France and Belgium.
Official sources of the company explained that this decision has been adopted "in a preventive way" and that it is "aligned with that of other countries of the group". The company has already suspended orders for this fish as of Tuesday and will stop selling it when it runs out of stock.
Last week, the Belgian division of Carrefour reported in a statement that it stopped selling pangasius - both fresh and frozen - due to environmental reasons.
"Given the doubts that persist about the adverse impacts that pangasius farms have on the environment, Carrefour ceases the sale of this fish and has already suspended its orders," the company explained.
The French multinational retailer explained that although the quality of the pangasius offered for sale was "impeccable", there are doubts about the control mechanisms of the farms where they are farmed - most of them located in Vietnam - to avoid waste contaminating its waters, EFE news agency reported.
This week it was also known that several Italian supermarkets have decided to stop selling pangasius, alleging concerns about pollution levels in the Asian farms that produce this fish.
Spain is the country that imported more pangasius in the European Union (EU) in 2015, however, the volume of its imports declined compared to the previous year, according to FAO's data.
Almost all suppliers are from Asia, mostly from Vietnam. Pangasius is also produced in Indonesia, Thailand, Bangladesh and Burma.
According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment, in 2015, Spain imported 23,179 tonnes of pangasius from Vietnam worth EUR 47.6 million.
Javier Ojeda, manager of the Business Association of Marine Aquaculture Producers of Spain (Apromar), told Efeagro that the decision of Carrefour should not give rise to an alarm about food safety, "since the fish sold in the EU is safe."
