Shrimp landings drop slightly in March but exceed historic average
(UNITED STATES, 4/27/2017)
Shrimp landings in the Gulf of Mexico in March showed a slight decline in volume compared to the same month last year, changing from 3.51 million pounds to 3.46 million pounds, according to statistics from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
All in all, the amount of shrimp landed by fishermen in the Gulf last month was 52.1 per cent higher than the prior sixteen-year historical average for the month (2.28 million pounds).
Considering the first months of the year, total shrimp landings in the region amounted to 10.16 million pounds, a volume that is slightly below to 10.42 million pounds landed in the first quarter of 2006. But these landings were 10.3 per cent above the prior sixteen-year historical average for the Gulf, which was 9.21 million pounds.
In total, shrimp landings in the first quarter of the year are a small portion of annual harvests. Over the last fifteen years, shrimp landed in the first three months have comprised between five and eleven percent to the total amount of shrimp landed in the region.
According to the Southern Shrimp Alliance (SSA), despite the relative lack of overall importance of first quarter landing figures, the data released by NOAA shows some interesting trends.
The report reveals that in 2017 landings have been spread more broadly amongst the states, with the exception of Mississippi, as reflected in the following percentages:
- Texas (2.99 million pounds): 29.4 per cent;
- Louisiana (2.61 million pounds): 25.7 per cent;
- Alabama (2.31 million pounds): 22.7 per cent;
- West coast of Florida (1.91 million pounds): 18.8 per cent.
Besides, the document has also analysed ex-vessel prices for small count sizes, which increased significantly in March compared to the same month in 2016.
Ex-vessel prices for 41-50 count shrimp experienced a growth from the month of March in 2016 to the same month this year, as it is shown in the following figures:
- Northern Gulf: from USD 1.74 per pound to USD 2.30;
- West coast of Florida: from USD 1.71 per pound to USD 2.69;
- Western Gulf: from USD 1.54 per pound to USD 3.11.
