The new group would bring together key people across the supply chain.

The Co-op Launches Sustainable Farmed Salmon Initiative

  (UNITED KINGDOM, 9/21/2017)

UK supermarket The Co-operative has launched a new Scottish Salmon Farming Group, an initiative that forms part of its commitment to selling responsibly-sourced fresh seafood.

The commitment follows the Co-op's pledge to source only 100% British meat, a move that  includes more than 20 independent regional co-operative retailers that buy wholesale from the Co-op group, with more than 4,000 outlets in total. According the Co-op the move was aimed at cutting back on import costs.

The Co-op sells 100% fresh farmed Scottish salmon in its stores.

The retailer said the new group would bring together key people across the supply chain, and it will help to build long-term relationships with its Scottish suppliers, such as processor Farne Salmon and Trout, while also focusing on best practice and performance in support of its new salmon farming standard.

“We’re proud to sell 100% fresh farmed Scottish salmon in our stores, and at a time when consumer demand is rising now is the perfect time to launch this new Scottish Salmon Farming Group", said Co-op’s fish sustainability manager Aisla Jones.

The Co-op has been a member of the Sustainable Seafood Coalition since 2011.

“It will build on our already-strong sustainability credentials and allow us to mirror the success we’ve seen across other Co-op farming groups, by enhancing and cementing our existing supplier relationships."

“We also want to make a positive impact within the Scottish communities that produce our world-class salmon.”

The Co-op's The commitment follows the Co-op's pledge to source only 100% British meat.

The Co-op has been a member of the Sustainable Seafood Coalition since 2011 and the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, working with suppliers and focusing on fish welfare and environmental impact.

About The Co-op Food

The Co-op Food, previously trading as The Co-operative Food, is a brand devised for the food retail business of the consumer co-operative movement in the United Kingdom.

When looking at food retail, the brand is commonly understood to represent one food retail business, though this is not true as it is used by over 15 different co-operative societies which operate over 4,000 outlets. Successor to Co-op Welcome and a range of regional formats, the latest version of the brand was introduced in 2016 with a significant advertising campaign.

Customers of many of the larger UK co-operative societies can earn an annual share of the profits at any "Co-operative" branded stores in proportion to purchases through The Co-operative Membership scheme.

In 2016, The Co-operative Food accounted for approximately 6.6% of the UK grocery market and was the winner of "convenience retailer of the year" at the 2016 Retail Industry Awards. The Cooperative Retail Group is expanding and will create 1,500 new jobs and open 100 new stores in 2017.
