Snow crab TAC reduced by 17 pct for NL
(CANADA, 4/6/2018)
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has decided to cut the snow crab total allowable catch (TAC) by 17 per cent for the Newfoundland and Labrador region for 2018.
The new TAC, amounting to 28,975 tonnes, includes 2 per cent increase in NAFO Division 3K (set at 5,932 tonnes), a 24 per cent decrease in 3LNO zone (18,838 tonnes), -30 per cent in the areas outside the 200 mile limit and 24 per cent in areas inside the 200 mile limit, a 19 per cent increase in the 3Ps quota (1,791 tonnes), and a 50 per cent reduction in 4R3Pn (499 tonnes).
Quotas in 2J south will remain at 2017 levels and those on 2HJ north will finalized at a later date. The Collaborative Post-Season Trap Survey (Use of Fish) TAC is 460 tonnes.
The management approach for 2018 includes the continuation of early and shortened fishing seasons, no fall fishery in 3K, continued implementation of the soft-shell protocol.
DFO points out that some fleets will be ready to fish immediately. An early opening in these areas is essential to providing the best opportunity to avoid high incidence of soft-shell during the fishery and to spread the landings over a longer period of time. In addition, grid based soft-shell protocols are continued in all areas.
DFO announcement on quotas comes just a couple of days after the Fish Price Setting Panel for Newfoundland and Labrador set the price for crab at CAD 4.55 per pound, drawing criticism from fishers and the Fish Food and Allied Workers (FFAW) union, who contend the market can support prices closer to CAD 5 per pound for harvesters.
“This decision is frustrating for fish harvesters who will see another reduction in their quota for 2018,” said Keith Sullivan, president of FFAW-Unifor, The Pilot informed.
“Compounding this frustration is the fact that harvesters in the Maritimes are receiving greater than CAD 5 per pound for snow crab,” the leader concluded.
