WWF calls for two-month ban on common hake
(CHILE, 10/1/2018)
The biological ban set to protect hake (Merluccius gayi gayi) during its reproductive period, came to an end on Sunday, September 30, marking the resumption of fishing activities around this resource.
"We trust that the balance of this ban will be positive, reflecting the greater awareness of the community regarding the delicate situation of this fishing resource. It is very satisfying that every time there is greater interest among citizens in becoming informed about this issue, reporting illegal sales and replicating hake protection messages," says Valesca Montes, coordinator of Sustainable Fisheries of WWF Chile.

"The ban is a measure that has proven effective in contributing to the recovery of stocks, however, there is much scientific evidence and also consensus among fishermen themselves of the need to extend it for another month, that is to say, to extend it during September and October", adds the expert.
With respect to the Chilean Hake Day, which will be held on October 14, for the second consecutive year, Valesca Montes expressed his hope that various coves nationwide can join the celebration.

This initiative is promoted by WWF Chile together with various organizations of artisanal fisheries with the collaboration of SERNAPESCA, and seeks to make visible the importance of this fishery at national level, which is currently in a state of overexploitation.
The central event will take place in Caleta El Membrillo, Valparaíso, and will consist of a family activity with tastings, live cooking and cultural presentations. Also, during the day, SERNAPESCA will release the balance of the audits carried out during the closure period.
