MOSCOW — RIA Novosti. The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Japan expressed protest to Moscow due to the fact that the Russian border guards fined the Japanese ships fishing near the island of Kunashir in the southern Kurils. About it RIA Novosti said the Japanese foreign Ministry.
In particular, in Tokyo claim that the January 7, employees of the Russian border guards stopped Japanese fishing trawler “Casamara-18”. The guards revealed violations, then escorted the trawler to the port on Kunashir, and then, after clarification, was released.
Tokyo has called the actions unacceptable. While in the Japanese foreign Ministry referring to its position as on the four disputed Islands, and the Agreement on fisheries off the southern Kuril Islands from 21 February 1998, according to which Japanese vessels may fish in the area for a fee according to the allocated quota.

The catch of Icelandic vessels was 65.4 thousand tonnes in February 2024 which is 56% less than in February 2023.
The pelagic catch was 25 thousand tonnes, 78% less than in February last year. Tthe main explanation for this large difference between years is due to no capelin being landed. Demersal catch was 39 thousand tonnes, 10% increase from February 2023.
In the 12 month period from March 2023 to February 2024 the catch was 1,272 thousand tonnes which is a 1% decrease from the previous 12 month period. Demersal catch got reduced by 11% while pelagic catch increased by 5%.

Information about catch of fish which are published in this press release are preliminary figures. The data is gathered by the Directorate of Fisheries.
The volume of frozen cuttlefish imported into Korea in February 2024 was 369 tons, an increase of 113% compared to the 173 tons imported in the same period in 2023.
Total import volume is 871 tons, showing a 65% increase from 527 tons in the same period last year, accounting for 0.6% of the total seafood import volume of 158,274 tons.
In February, 475 tonnes, or 55%, of frozen cuttlefish were imported from Vietnam, 147 tonnes, or 17%, from Thailand, 132 tonnes from Indonesia and 51 tonnes from Malaysia.
The import price by country was the highest in Thailand at USD 9.21/kg, followed by Vietnam at USD 5.64/kg and Indonesia at USD 7.60/kg.
The import amount of frozen cuttlefish in February 2024 was USD 2.26 million, a 77% increase compared to USD 1.27 million in the same period of 2023, and the total import amount was USD 5.35 million, a 78% increase compared to USD 3.01 million in the same period of the previous year.
As of February, the average import price was USD 6.15/kg, an 8% increase from USD 5.72/kg in the same period last year.
In February 2024, Vietnam's seafood exports decreased over the same period. However, cumulatively in the first 2 months of the year, seafood exports still increased by 13%, reaching more than 1.2 billion USD. Exports to major markets all increased compared to the same period.

Jamaica has received the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for the Jamaica Queen Conch (Pink conch-Strombus gigas)Industrial Dive Fishery located in the Pedro Bank.
This certification marks the first of its kind for a Conch Fishery, making Jamaica a forerunner in the world.
The MSC program is the most robust certification scheme for wild-capture fisheries in the market and requires an exhaustive assessment of the fishery and practices against three principles - Stock Health, Environmental Impacts and Effective Management.
With this certification, buyers, retailers, and general consumers are assured that our wild-capture fishery conforms to the internationally recognized standards for environmental sustainability. Further, this certification can be used to gain further access to supply chains that require MSC-certified seafood.
The certification is valid for five years and covers hand gather using free-diving, scuba, or hookah dive gear for Queen Conch. Vessels and companies authorized to use the MSC logo for sales of Queen Conch into the MSC supply chain are listed in the Public Certification Report and can be viewed on the MSC website.
Union says processors don't have the capacity to process the entire expected harvest
The Fish, Food & Allied Workers union (FFAW) formally urged Fisheries Minister Elvis Loveless to open the fisheries to outside buyers in a letter on Friday, following a week of intensifying protests from harvesters.
The letter is a response to Loveless's own letter from Thursday evening, in which he requested a plan from the union that would guarantee the jobs of all FFAW members, harvesters, and fish plant workers if the market opens.

"Any decision to allow outside buyers must consider the impacts on all partners in the seafood industry, and particularly on fish plant workers," Loveless says in his letter, adding that if such a plan is presented by the FFAW, the government will consider opening the market to outside buyers for snow crab.
"More competition and market access for harvesters is desperately needed," the union wrote.
Since March 4, crab harvesters have been protesting at Confederation Building, asking for an open market so they are not forced to sell their crab only to processors in the province.[...]

RyFish, based in Forsand municipality, and is a sister company to FishGLOBE, which has a patent search, developed and sells the FishGLOBE system, has been granted a display permit by the Directorate of Fisheries.
The display permit that has been awarded is for 780 tonnes of MTB with a duration of 10 years, according to a press release.
RyFish is based at Oanes at the entrance to Lysefjorden in Strand municipality in Rogaland. There, the company operates post-smolt production in two globes supplied by FishGLOBE.

Scottish Sea Farms has taken delivery of the first batch of “green” eggs at the new £2m incubation unit at the company’s Barcaldine Hatchery.
The move is part of a strategy aimed at making the company’s operations more self-reliant in terms of ova supply, and less dependent on imported eggs.
