Other Media | The Fish Site: Shrimp aquaculture: a tale of two pandemics

Tuesday, August 11, 2020

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted different countries very differently – as illustrated by the stark differences in the performance of the shrimp sectors of Ecuador and Vietnam.

Despite poor prices during 2019, the shrimp sector started the year with a great deal of optimism, Nikolik reflects.

IN BRIEF - China suspends seafood imports from two Russian vessels for a month

Saturday, September 26, 2020

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - China will stop accepting import declarations from two Russian vessels for four weeks, after the coronavirus was detected on the outer packaging and samples of Russian aquatic products.

The customs office on Saturday said the coronavirus was detected by authorities in the eastern coastal province of Shandong.

The two vessels were named as fishing vessel Vladimir Starzhinsky LLC Roliz and transport vessel Crystal Africa.

The restrictions come as China tightens seafood imports from a number of sources due to the coronavirus.

Customs on Friday said it would suspend seafood imports from a Brazilian company for a week after a package of fish tested positive for the coronavirus.

Last week, China suspended imports from an Indonesian seafood producer for one week after a batch of its frozen hairtail fish tested positive for the coronavirus.

Chinese authorities in the northeastern Jilin province had also detected the virus on the packaging of imported squid from Russia last week.

IN BRIEF - Tennessee forms commission to halt invasive Asian carp

Friday, September 25, 2020

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has signed an executive order establishing a commission that will provide advice on mitigating the invasion of Asian carp into the state’s lakes and river systems, according to a news release.

Asian carp were first imported to the U.S. in the 1960s and 1970s and now threaten to upend aquatic ecosystems, starve out native fish and wipe out endangered mussel and snail populations along the Mississippi River and dozens of tributaries.

Nationally, state and federal agencies have spent roughly $607 million to stop them since 2004. Projects in the works are expected to push the price tag to about $1.5 billion over the next decade.

Lee signed the order Wednesday. The new Asian Carp Advisory Commission will provide its first report in October.

Other Media | FiskerForum: VisNed files complaint against Greenpeace

Friday, September 25, 2020

Dutch fishermen’s association VisNed has filed a formal complaint against Greenpeace following its latest stunt in dropping boulders on Dogger Bank fishing grounds. VisNed states that contrary to Greenpeace’s claims, there is no illegal fishing in the area.

The latest Greenpeace boulder publicity stunt, the latest in a long series of these going back a couple of decades, has been widely condemned by fishermen’s organisations – with many pointing out that fishing vessels are pursued relentlessly for the slightest infringement, while Greenpeace appears to be able to carry out clear infringements of the law (including the UK’s Merchant Shipping Act) without an interference from the authorities.
