IN BRIEF - Justice Department will appeal court order forcing Southeast Alaska troll fishery closure

UNITED STATES
Thursday, June 01, 2023

The United States Department of Justice will appeal a federal court order forcing the closure of the commercial king salmon troll fishery in Southeast Alaska.

In early May, Washington U.S. District Court Judge Richard Jones upheld an earlier recommendation that the Southeast summer and winter king fisheries were catching too much of the food source of a dwindling population of Puget Sound’s Southern Resident killer whales, in violation of the Endangered Species Act. Judge Jones’s order required the fishery closures and required the National Marine Fisheries Service to vacate and rewrite the rules that allow for the fisheries to happen.

The Justice Department’s notice to appeal was submitted on May 23 on behalf of the Department of Commerce and the National Marine Fisheries Service.

The defendant intervenors in the case, the Alaska Trollers Association and the State of Alaska, filed motions earlier this month calling for a “partial stay” of the order, pending an appeal to allow the fisheries to proceed. The state argued that the court order had failed to account for the economic, cultural and social harm to the troll fleet and Southeast Alaska.[continues...]

IN BRIEF - Seaweed is a carbon-free source of protein and the EU seeks to boost its production

EUROPEAN UNION
Thursday, June 01, 2023

Aquaculture is considered key to mitigating the challenges faced by the traditional fishing sector.

Aquaculture only contributes 20% of the European Union's consumption of seafood, well below the world average of 50%, something that the European Commission and professionals in the sector hope to change.

This industry is considered key to mitigating the challenges faced by the traditional fishing industry based on the capture of wild species.

"We have to look for success stories of alternative economic uses of the sea that we can expand and share in Europe's coastal areas and create new resilient jobs," Virginijus Sinkevicius, the European Commissioner for the Environment, recently told Euronews.

IN BRIEF - Mar recalls that 80% of Galician mussels do not have PDO and that hatcheries are viable

SPAIN
Thursday, June 01, 2023

The Consellería do Mar wanted to respond to the statement signed by the Platform in Defense of Breeding regarding the obtaining of cheek in hatcherys. The department chaired by Rosa Quintana insists that the regional administration is working on different paths and that one of them is -indeed- the production of cheek in hatcheries. They stress from Mar that "it is a viable alternative that allows reducing both the dependence on the natural environment to obtain mexilla and the pressure on the stones" and that it is complemented with other options such as "capture by means of ropes or other collecting elements" . What they clarify from the department of the Xunta is that the intention has never been to cover 100% of the harvest with seed obtained artificially, but they understand that it would be a good solution for a large part of the production.

It should be remembered that from the Plataforma en Defensa da Cría they fear that the fact that the cheek is obtained in the hatchery could harm the loss of the Denomination of Orixe Protexida Mexillón de Galicia. The Ministry also responds to this, recalling that "around 80% of the mussel marketed in Galicia is not covered by the Denomination of Orixe" and that, therefore, the hatcherys would serve to provide breeding for most of the sector combining it with other methods. Other Media | The Fish Site: Fish farmers express concerns over wild salmon protection zones

UNITED KINGDOM
Thursday, June 01, 2023

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has announced plans to establish wild salmon protection zones, in which sea lice numbers on farms are strictly controlled in order to protect migratory salmonids from the parasites.

Under the plans, fish farm operators in these zones would have to keep sea lice numbers to low levels and face additional monitoring to help safeguard migrating smolts from the lice. About 120 potential zones have been identified in those areas of the west coast through which wild salmon migrate.

Thursday, June 01, 2023

Japan’s imports of fish and fish preparations from Russia in 2022 rose to a new record value of JPY 155.2 billion (USD 1.14 billion, EUR 1.05 billion), up 12.9 percent from 2021, frustrating other nations, especially Canada, that have vowed to heavily limit or totally ban imports from the country following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The previous record high value of seafood imports from Russia to Japan occurred in 2018, when Japan imported JPY 140.2 billion (USD 1.03 billion, EUR 950 million) worth of seafood.

In the Maldives, traditional one-by-one tuna fishing is largely considered a male-dominated industry, but “women are the ones that turn the fish into money”.
