ST. ANTHONY, N.L. - The St. Anthony Chamber of Commerce is concerned about the effect cuts to the northern shrimp quota could have on the local economy.
“These cuts have the potential to be devastating,” says Chamber of Commerce president Desmond McDonald.
For now, McDonald feels it’s hard to determine at this point what the specific effects are going to be. Currently, he says, there is no way of knowing exactly how much income fishers will make or how many hours of work will be available for people in the processing plants.
However, in the event that jobs are lost and many workers may not be getting enough hours for unemployment insurance (EI), McDonald says there wouldn’t be as many dollars going back into the local economy.
Indeed, plant workers may even have to move elsewhere just to find jobs.

The heatwave is threatening to plunge Scotland’s angling industry into crisis as the water levels of some of the most popular salmon rivers have fallen to drastically low levels after record temperatures and weeks without rain.
The salmon will not swim in to the rivers if the water levels are low. Salmon and sea trout fishing brings tens of millions of pounds a year to rural areas and supports more than 1,000 jobs.
Andrew Douglas-Home, former chairman of the River Tweed Commission, said that salmon fishing had all but ceased on the river. “At a time when salmon numbers in Scotland are low anyway, it is a pretty disastrous situation for everyone connected with the salmon fishing industry,” he said.
After a much talked-about environmental degradation fish meal operations situated in the Kombo South settlements of Sanyang and Kartong, the government of The Gambia has decided to suspend and closed fish meal operations in these two communities.
At a press briefing held at State House on Wednesday, the Director of Press at President’s Office Aminata Bojang Sissoho, disclosed that the fish meal operation in Sanyang has been suspended, while similar operation in Kartong has been closed down because of their shortcomings in meeting the standard requirements.
“On environment, operations of the fish meal in Sanyang have been suspended until the requirements have been fulfilled,” she said.

Pelagic fishing boats in Mauritania capture more than a million tons per year, the Fisheries and Maritime Economy minister, Nany Ould Chrougha said on Wednesday.He was speaking at the opening of a workshop organized by the Mauritanian Institute of Oceanographic and Fisheries Research (IMROP) on the exploitation and management systems of pelagic fisheries.
The workshop is intended to provide a framework for consultation and follow-up on the implementation of the National Strategy for the Responsible Management of Fisheries Resources for Sustainable Development (2015-2019), which focuses on the preservation of fisheries resources and marine biodiversity.
GUWAHATI - The Assam government has banned import and sale of fish from Andhra Pradesh and other states for a period of 10 days after cancer-causing chemical formalin content was found in the imported fish.
The decision was taken after formalin, a cancer-inducing chemical which is used to keep dead fish fresh, was detected in fish being sold in markets areas of Guwahati.
Minister of state for health and family welfare Pijush Hazarika said, "The government has taken a decision to ban fishes brought from outside after analysis of growing health issues due to the consumption of fish containing formalin (Formaldehyde)."

Good news for everyone craving fresh Gulf shrimp – the commercial shrimp season will re-open for both state and federal waters on Saturday, July 15 2018.
The official re-opening is set for 30 minutes after sunset.
“The Gulf season was closed to protect brown shrimp until they can reach larger, more valuable sizes during their major period of migration from the bays to the Gulf of Mexico,” a press release from the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council said.
Geoducks and horse clams off Haida Gwaii and Tofino are now on DFO’s no-harvest list.
DFO announced its latest harvesting closure on July 10, which includes Area 2 and 24. On Haida Gwaii, North Beach remains open for razor-clam harvesting.
People who eat contaminated geoduck could get paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), which in extreme cases can be deadly.
“One result was because the sample came back above acceptable standards,” said DFO’s Elysha Gordon, the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program Coordinator. “I will open and close an area based on test results, whether the area is clean and free of toxic algae or not.”

Traces of chemical weapons agent found in shrimp Sweden
Traces of a chemical warfare agent were found in shrimp caught near the Swedish island of Maseskar, where 28 ships with chemical and other weapons were sunk by the allies after World War II, the Swedish National Water Agency said.
