In a strong market, Mowi made an operational profit of 207 million euros at record-high levels in the first quarter.

Mowi’s first quarter was characterised by a surge in salmon prices in all markets due to a continued increase in global demand for salmon combined with low supply.

The Scottish seafood industry, with help from the Scottish government, is working to revive its langoustine exports after years of decline.

Exports of langoustine – also known as nephrops (Nephrops norwegicus) – from the U.K. to major markets have almost halved in the past decade. Typically exported to Europe – with the three largest buyers being Spain, Italy, and France – the U.K. exported a total of 18,000 metric tons (MT) of langoustine in 2010, with the majority of that being sourced from Scotland.

After the agreement reached between the Government and truck leaders, which meant the unblocking of various routes that affected the connectivity of the Biobío Region last week, Camanchaca reported that it will normalize its operations starting today, Monday, May 9.

France designs a plan to abandon the Mediterranean fleet. From Saturday May 7, southern shipowners can submit their applications for the new fleet exit plan (FEP), the fourth in almost ten years. The restrictions on trawling the Mediterranean fleet have led to the abandonment of many shipowners.

For their part, trawling fishermen from the ports of Tarragona, Torredembarra, L'Ampolla and L'Ametlla de Mar, will remain on land for two months and ten days and will not return to fishing until July 1.

A group of salmon farmers on Norway’s south west coast are to continue their fight against the government’s controversial traffic light control scheme.

Last week a special court of appeal upheld a decision by Oslo’s Ministry of Trade and Industry to place the area known as production zone 04 into the red category which will result in a 6% reduction in their output.

Scotland’s economic recovery following the Covid lockdowns has largely been driven by strong growth in exports of drinks and seafood products, which together accounted for £5.2 billion of the £5.7 bn earned from Scottish food and drink exports in 2021.

Beverage exports, dominated by Scotch whisky, were worth £4.2 bn, and fish and seafood exports brought in £1 bn, according to a report by the Food and Drink Federation (FDF).

Chile President Gabriel Boric is reportedly considering a moratorium on the farmed salmon sector that would halt its expansion in the country.

The 36-year-old Boric, the youngest president in Chile’s history, was elected in December 2021 and took office in March 2022. Previously, as a member of Chile's congress, he questioned the environmental sustainability of the country’s USD 5.2 billion (EUR 4.6 billion) salmon-farming industry.
