Creation of state fisheries and aquaculture councils promoted

Through the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA), the Mexican government will promote the creation of state councils for fisheries and aquaculture, as part of its strategy to focus its actions on the places where the problems are affecting the fishing and aquaculture sectors. 

This was announced by the head of CONAPESCA, Raúl Elenes Angulo, in a meeting with fishery and aquaculture leaders of four national organizations, where he said that these councils will act as bodies to directly address the sector´s problems and needs.

In order to fulfill this objective, it proposed to hold state and/or regional meetings with the producers of the productive fishing and aquaculture zones of the country.

He said that another of the presidential instructions is to automate administrative processes to reduce the intervention of intermediaries and eradicate bad practices in the public service. He added that, during this administration, the necessary changes will be made for the benefit of the sector.

"We are going to put special emphasis on solving old problems with you, now is the time to solve them as much as we can," said Elenes Angulo.

The state fisheries and aquaculture councils, the participation of the sector, the decentralization of many of the functions to the states, are part of the decisions that can be made between the three levels of government in agreement with the fishery and aquaculture producers, said the official.

The SADER agency will rehabilitate four aquaculture centers, improve five reservoirs and support 150 aquaculture units with biological input.

The attendees of the meeting expressed support to the head of CONAPESCA and gave their vote of confidence to work hand in hand with this body and place fishing and aquaculture as a priority in the country.

The meeting was attended by leaders and members of the CANAINPESCA, Mexican Confederation of Fisheries and Aquaculture Cooperatives (CONMECOOP), Union of Shipowners of the Pacific Coast, Fishermen of Southern Sinaloa and Regional Federation of Cooperative Societies I.P. del Norte de Sinaloa and Sur de Sonora SA from RL.
