The management of the shrimp fishery (Pleoticus muelleri) and a possible delay in a month of the start of the harvest of this crustacean, from May to June, were discussed at a session of the Federal Fisheries Council held last week in Buenos Aires.

The province of Chubut manages the most important shrimp fishery in Argentina►

At that meeting, the representative of Chubut shared a technical report from INIDEP indicating that although there is a number of prawn specimens similar to other seasons, there is a decrease in its size with respect to 2017 and 2018.

"We had a great debate on this point given that, although the shrimp is a resource that is going through a good time, it has delayed its maturation, there is the same amount, but smaller and researchers are evaluating this situation. We do not know if this is due to environmental or other issues," said Chubut Fisheries Secretary, Adrián Awstin.

In this regard, he clarified that "the product itself is not at risk", but he considered it necessary to evaluate how the management of the resource would continue and the possibility of delaying its capture in national waters. "We are closing provincial waters with a successful season, the request of a delay of the national season is beeing considered," he added.

"In this way, instead of fishing in May, as it was done last year, the opening of national waters could be delayed until June; and we have to see how we cover that period, and that's why we're working with hake," Awstin explained.

As reported by Revista Puerto, there would be consensus within the Federal Fisheries Council to wait for the shrimp to grow before being subjected to the fishing nets.
