The survey started on 27 September has not yet concluded due to adverse weather conditions. The first sets showed shrimp specimens of good commercial size, but very low concentrations.

The Secretary of Fisheries of Chubut authorized a commercial survey on the shrimp resource within its 12 miles of provincial jurisdiction, which started on 27 September. The study is carried out by vessels of the artisanal fleet of up to 9.90 meters in length and ships of the coastal fleet of up to 17 meters in length, with the possibility of completing the quota of boats with yellows of up to 21 meters of length.

The survey should be completed in “five effective fishing days”, but until yesterday there were ships still have to complete one or two days of sets. However, with the preliminary data that give a very low ratio of kilos per hour of drag, with averages well below 400 kilos per hour of drag, the Ministry of Fisheries has resolved to postpone the opening date of the provincial fishing ground to the Pleoticus muelleri resource fishery and schedule another survey for the second half of October.

The data was announced to Revista Puerto by the head of the provincial fisheries portfolio, Adrian Awstin, pointing out that with the information obtained so far “I have made the decision not to open, because the averages are very low and we will do another survey a little further south on the edge of the second half of October,” he confirmed.

The first effective fishing day was completed on 28 September with an average of 368 kilograms of shrimp per hour of trawling, with incidental fishing of hubbsi hake of 27 kilos per hour of trawling. The size percentages of the specimens captured yielded 54% L1 shrimp; 26% of L2; 15% of L3; 3% of L4 and 2% smallers.

Meanwhile, on the second effective day of prospecting fishing, the average was reduced to 264 kilos of shrimp per hour of haulage, with 32 kilos of hubbsi hake per hour of haulage. The sizes of the crustacean pieces were maintained with 52% of L1; 23% of L2, 15% of L3, 3% of L4, and 7% smaller.

Also, on the third effective day of catches of the survey, the average capture was lower than the first two days of study, down to 150 kilos of shrimp per hour of drag.

The Ministry of Fisheries of Chubut has set as an “opening parameter” an average of 400 kilos of shrimp per hour of drag, and in none of the three effective days of prospecting was that base reached, and although some ships still have one or two remaining fishing days to complete the data, the application authority has already decided  not to open, for now, the provincial waters.

“The conditions to open are not given, so we will have to wait a few more days. We are already starting to schedule a new survey, it still has no date, but it will be on the edge of the second half of October, ” said Adrian Awstin.
