The Federal Fisheries Council ordered the early opening of the squid season (Illex argentinus) south of the 44th parallel, repeating the scheme of previous years.
The fleet will be able to start operating in that area from 0:00 am on January 10, 2020.

The measure already had the scientific and technical support of the National Institute of Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP). The Institute has expressed that based on the information from the catches and the biological sampling carried out on board the jigging vessels ('poteros') and the research cruises that INIDEP has carried out in the Patagonia region for several years in the month of January, it was observed that the SDV is distributed between 44 ° and 48 ° South latitude, west of the 62 ° West longitude meridian, with a very low or no coexistence with the South-Patagonian Stock (SSP). For this reason, that would be the area with the greatest possibility of fishing the SDV in January without affecting the SSP.

According to statistics from the Undersecretary of Fisheries of the Nation, until October 17, the accumulated catch of Illex squid reached 96,025.8 tonnes, of which the jigging fleet contributed the majority: 86,793.6 tonnes. In 2018, the total catch of this cephalopod was 108,303.5 tonnes.
