Australian requested to lift shrimp trade ban

Việtnam government urges Australia to lift its ban on Vietnamese shrimp and uncooked shelled shrimp import.

This six-month shelled shrimp import ban from Asian nations had been set by the Australian Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources in early January this year fearing an outbreak of the white spot disease in Australia, VNS reported.

Minister of Industry and Trade Trần Tuấn Anh sent a public letter to the Minister of Trade, Tourism and Investment and the Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources of Australia regarding the matter in February.

Both ministers sent their replies to that letter on March 8 and April 30, respectively, explaining that the ban was based on regulations for bio-security.

Therefore, the corresponding Vietnamese authorities are working with the relevant agencies in Australia in this regard.

The MoIT raised the issue of the ban at all bilateral meetings with the Australian side, expressing Việtnam’s concerns and asking Australia to consider lifting the ban or replacing it with other measures that would have less impact on business.

Representatives of the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources said they are working on the matter, including reviewing the import conditions for products targeted by the ban, to make the decision on resumption of safe trading of shrimp.

The Australian ministers affirmed that bilateral trade with Việtnam was important to their country and that Australia was willing to co-operate with Vietnam to review the risk assessment measures.
