Survey begins to evaluate fishing resources in Gulf of Cádiz

The oceanographic vessel Miguel Oliver, of the General Secretariat of Fisheries, participates in a new edition of the ARSA scientific survey for the assessment of fishery resources and the characterization of the maritime environment of the Gulf of Cádiz, with the scientific coordination of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO).

During this survey, studies will be conducted to obtain data on the abundance indices of the main demersal species of fishing interest in the Gulf of Cádiz, to obtain data on the abundance indices of their geographic distribution patterns and the hydrographic and sedimentological characteristics of area.

ARSA is part of the bottom trawling surveys that are carried out in Spain, and which are one of the main methods of direct study of exploited fishing populations. In this way, independent data are obtained from the fishing activity, for the correct management of the different stocks of the fishing grounds.

The evaluation of the fishery resources is made from stratified abundance index data of the main commercial species, with their size distributions and biological data, both fish andrust caceans and mollusks.

Throughout this study, oceanographic data will also be taken, as well as sediment data through a collector placed in the art for each trawl.

The oceanographic-fishing surveys in the Gulf of Cádiz are being systematically developed and are currently integrated into the National Basic Data Program for the sustainable management of marine resources.

The information obtained in this new survey, in joint analysis with its historical series, and with different types of data from the fishery, is used by the scientists in the corresponding assessment groups, from which the recommendations for fisheries managers should come out. In this way, sector, scientists and administrations can achieve sustainable exploitation of different populations.
