Lima - The National Fisheries Society (SNP) and its associated companies presented the first sustainability report of the Peruvian fishmeal and fish oil industry, becoming the only one of its category worldwide, which integrates the indicators of the prestigious Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).
This effort began in 2018 and shows the data collected from the fishing industry as well as the main companies in the sector such as Austral Group, CFG Investment-Copeinca, Exalmar, Hayduk Corporation, Pesquera Centinela, Pesquera Diamante and TASA.
During the conference "The route to a more competitive Peru: the sustainability report", where the aforementioned report was presented, the GRI gave recognition to the fishing association for the effort and work done to benefit the sector and the country.
"It is the first time in the world that an industry with such a specific activity as fishmeal and fish oil presents its actions of sustainability and contribution to the development of an entire sector. It has been an arduous and interesting work that has allowed us to align and standardize indicators to report them, "said the president of the SNP, Cayetana Aljovín.
Among the relevant topics reported in the document are economic performance, care of marine biodiversity, effluent and emissions management, occupational health and safety management, relationship with communities, ethics and anti-corruption policies, as well as gender equity in corporate governance
Aljovín said that this report also evidences the contribution of the fishmeal and fish oil industry to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) promoted by the United Nations, since it is a commitment of the country and the private sector.
"The fishing sector not only contributes to SDG 14 linked to underwater life but also to the objectives of zero hunger, diversity, water care, economic performance, work with communities, among others," he said.
