Environmental agency orders provisional measures to Ventisqueros for salmon escape

The Superintendency of the Environment (SMA) has ordered provisional measures to the Tubildad salmon farming center, operated by the company Productos del Mar Ventisqueros SA, as a result of the environmental risk caused by the salmon escape occurred on the 26th last December

According to the SMA resolution, the events indicated generate situations of environmental risk that must be addressed with measures aimed at achieving the recapture and / or correct fish disposal.

Operations of Ventisqueros in the Chilean Patagonia

The measures were based on the inspections carried out by officials of the Los Lagos Regional Office of the Superintendency of the Environment, together with personnel of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA) and the Maritime Authority of the same region.

After analyzing all the information gathered, the following measures were ordered:

1. Establish and execute a periodic inspection program along the coastal edge of the commune of Quemchi that allows the final disposal of new mortalities, including the coasts of that commune and its islands. To comply with the above, the company must submit a weekly report with the background information, indicating at least the place and / or location of the dead specimens, with georeferenced photographs, number of rescued specimens and measures for their denaturing and / or final provision.

2. Present and execute a recapture program of escaped specimens, with geographic information based on the risk analysis of movements of escaped fish, also indicating weekly the progress status of this recapture program, which will be executed on a daily basis. Also, this recapture program should consider inspections of the circumscribed beaches in the aforementioned sector of the Quemchi community.

The term of these measures is 15 business days from the notification day.

Meanwhile, the SMA continues with the investigation of the facts that founded the provisional measures.
