Fundación Chinquihue has started the second phase of a CORFO project that seeks to develop an international business model to commercialize the loco resource (Concholepas concholepas).
The Foundation is working together with artisanal fishermen in the management areas in the Maullín district in the development of an associative and export business model, commercially boosting the loco product of the "Locos del Sur" brand, both in the national market and international.
Supported on the basis of its differentiating elements -original, nutritional contribution and application for Fair Trade certification-, during the development of the project a regional brand was created under the name of "Locos del Sur". In this stage, a digital marketing strategy was applied to make it known at a national level, after the signing of an associative agreement with the local producers.
Seventeen organizations, all from Maullín, benefit from this project.
After the completion of the first part of the project it was possible to identify Mexico as a potential international market, so in this second stage the efforts will focus on the positioning of this local product in the Aztec country.
Alex Winkler, manager of the Chinquihue Foundation, indicated that this initiative seeks to improve the competitiveness of artisanal fishermen who produce locos in management areas of the Maullín community.
"We have already advanced in this objective after a first stage of this project and what remains to be done now is to further enhance what is done, and find the most appropriate and convenient way to place this attractive local product in the international market. For that, a strategy is already being worked on that will allow us to fulfill that objective, "he explained.
Winkler also indicated that much has been done in terms of production, and that now the challenge is to advance in the commercial part.
The total production of locos during the year 2017 exceeded 2,000 tonnes in the commune of Maullín, according to data from the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA).
Among the activities planned during the development of this second part of the project, they contemplate a commercial strategy to negotiate with potential foreign clients, and attendance at fairs and business rounds. In addition, work will be done to prepare for obtaining Fair Trade standards, with the objective of achieving this certification.
