NVG Herring Dominates, Mackerel Quota is Fished Up

NVG Herring (Norwegian Spring-Spawning Herring)

The NVG herring fishery has been running at full capacity. A total of 25,000 tonnes of NVG herring were reported last week. The majority of the catches came from Kvænangen, while some were fished in the areas south of Sørøya and around Stjernøya. A few catches also came from the areas around Smøla, Hitra, and north of Frøya.

  • The Coastal fleet now has 27,000 tonnes remaining of its total quota of 118,449 tonnes for 2025.

  • The Purse seine fleet is approaching the end, with approximately 4,500 tonnes remaining of its total quota of 111,636 tonnes.

  • The Trawl group has completed its quota of 20,140 tonnes.

The average size of the herring ranged from 223 grams to 347 grams, but most of it was over 300 grams.

Mackerel

The Norwegian quota for mackerel in 2025, which is 152,256 tonnes, is now fished up.

Despite the quota being filled, an additional 6,519 tonnes of mackerel were reported by nine vesselsfive Norwegian and four foreign. The fishing took place in the area between Shetland and the boundary to the NEZ (Norwegian Economic Zone), west of Bergen. The size of the mackerel varied between 329 grams and 430 grams.

  • Catch sizes ranged from 39 tonnes to a significant 1,580 tonnes.

  • The largest single catch of 1,580 tonnes was taken by the Shetlander "Research" and landed at Brødrene Sperre in Ellingsøy.

North Sea Herring

A total of 2,434 tonnes of North Sea herring were reported. Of this, 992 tonnes went for meal/oil, and 1,441 tonnes were sold for consumption.

The catches were taken by nine Norwegian and three foreign vessels in both the NEZ and British waters, further south in the North Sea. The consumption herring weighed between 70 grams and 208 grams, but the vessel "Frøyhav" reported larger herring at 285 grams from the area near Bremangerlandet.

Ocean Sprat (Havbrisling)

  • The Danish vessel "Themis" reported 350 tonnes of ocean sprat for consumption, fished east of Newcastle.

  • In addition, 2,300 tonnes of ocean sprat for meal/oil were reported from three Danish vessels.

Coastal Sprat (Kystbrisling)

Two vessels reported a total of 66 tonnes of coastal sprat. Two catches were taken in the Skagerak/Outer Oslofjord, and one catch was taken in Rogaland. Large coastal sprat are being caught, with a size between 45 and 70 pieces per kilo.

Horse Mackerel

Three vessels reported 27 tonnes of horse mackerel from Rogaland

Blue Whiting (Kolmule)

The vessel "Rødholmen" reported a catch of 465 tonnes of blue whiting.
