Political situation in Argentina complicates local perspectives
FALKLAND ISLANDS
Monday, August 12, 2019, 20:00 (GMT + 9)
The result of the elections yesterday in Argentina indicates that the Kirchnerist government will return after the final elections that will take place next October (yesterday's elections are a kind of "primary elections" called PASO)
Motivated by the changes that arose in the relationship between the UK and the EU due to Brexit on the one hand, and by a political change generated by the Macri government regarding foreign policy and in particular on the Malvinas issue, the government of the islands has been advancing and collaborating on different issues with Macri's administration.
They have not only begun joint research and scientifics studies on migratory resources such as squid but also on energy issues due to oil investments.
The results of the primary elections sound an alarm over a drastic potential change in Argentine politics regarding these islands. It is more than likely that the Fernandez-Fernandez formula wins next October, and although the new government may try to be more "diplomatic" with other powers to avoid past mistakes, it is very likely that the relationship with the islands government will worsen and even turn in the opposite direction.
This situation will surely generate meetings both locally and with the Foreign Office in London in the next few days to analyze different options and scenarios.
For the Spanish partners of the JV in Falklands the picture is getting extremely complicated and there is little they can do at the moment.
