Coastal Fleet Kickstarts Mackerel Season While Faroese Vessel Sets Blue Whiting Record

The Norwegian fishing season is gaining momentum as the smaller coastal fleet begins its seasonal harvest and international vessels deliver massive hauls to southern ports. From fresh mackerel hitting local markets to record-breaking blue whiting deliveries, activity along the coast is ramping up despite chilly sea temperatures.

Mackerel

The smallest coastal fleet has officially begun fishing for the fresh market. Last week, 8 boats reported a total catch of 17.6 tons of mackerel. The fishing activity spanned from Alver in Vestland to Strand in Rogaland. The individual fish weighed between 400 and 500 grams and were sold directly for fresh consumption.

Blue Whiting

It was a significant week for blue whiting, with 3 Faroese vessels reporting a combined total of 8,503 tons. Leading the fleet was the Christian i Grøtinum, which delivered the year's largest single load of 3,505 tons to Prima Protein AS in Egersund. This massive catch was harvested within the Faroese zone.

Horse Mackerel

In the Alver region, the vessel Austfjordgut reported a modest catch of 2 tons of horse mackerel. The fish were consistent in size, averaging 400 grams each.

North Sea Herring

Small-scale herring fishing is also underway, with the vessel Fiskaren reporting 800 kg of North Sea herring from Alver in Vestland, averaging 300 grams per fish.

However, larger operations in the North Sea face a slower start. Fat samples taken from catches by the Straumbas in late April indicate that the herring remain very lean. Experts attribute this to unusually cold conditions in the North Sea. The industry is now looking for warmer weather and increased sunlight to stimulate plankton growth, ensuring the herring can feed and reach the desired quality for the upcoming season.
