The Embarked Workers of the Industrial Fishing Fleet described it as regrettable that the Senate Chamber approved of the idea of legislating the bill to force giant squid catch with jigger and hand lines.

Through a statement, the organization notes that judging by the statements made by the legislators who voted in favour, "more than a decision on a change of rigging is a political signal of overdue accounts that do not correspond to the workers although they are the ones who will pay for them with instability of their employment, unemployment and lack of protection".

"This type of laws questions the continuity of the job that seamen have managed to formalize through decades of union’s work, for thousands of families in the country, and the senators continue with a bill that the Fisheries Commission of the lower house approved without even listening to the workers," the statement added. “They forget that laws that will cause this social impact should carry indications that protect workers. They just want to clean up the bad image of the legislators at the expense of the weakest ones, the workers."

In view of this situation, Juan Carlos González, president of the Captains’ Association, said that the workers are preparing themselves to defend the urgency of the Executive and the Legislative Power to consider the recognition of their quality as fishermen and of the time worked with work overload, as well as "the imperative" of a social platform that considers men who will be unemployed according to seniority levels with pensions of different characteristics.

"This platform is being refined and together with actions that the industrial fishermen decide at this time, they will defend themselves with all their strength, in all possible scenarios," the statement concludes.

It should be noted that the bill was approved on Tuesday in the Senate, but the deadline for entry of indications was opened until Monday, October 29.
