MSC certification reaches record levels in the country, driven by major retailers and a 32% increase in sales of products bearing the Blue Fish label.

Within the framework of World Tuna Day, new data published by the international non-profit organization Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) confirms the upward trend of tuna certified as sustainable in the Spanish market. In the last year, sales of MSC-certified tuna exceeded 4,500 tons in the retail channel, a 32% increase over the previous year and the highest level in recent years.

Growth Driven by Major Distribution

The volume of tuna with the MSC Blue Fish Label grew slightly, driven by skipjack tuna, which doubled its volume. Tuna products now represent 14% of MSC-certified seafood in Spain: 37% in canned goods, 26% frozen, and 24% fresh. This progress responds to a combination of factors: solid demand in households and a rapidly evolving supply. There are now more than 240 tuna references with the Blue Label on the Spanish market.

Key industry milestones include:

  • Lidl: Leads MSC tuna sales in Spain after incorporating three new skipjack tuna canned references under its Nixe brand.

  • Eroski: Set a milestone by launching the first canned yellowfin tuna in olive oil under its own brand with the MSC Blue Label.

  • La Sirena: In 2024, achieved 100% MSC certification across its entire frozen tuna range.

  • Frinsa and Rianxeira: Market their entire range of tuna preserves with MSC certification.

Other operators such as Aldi, Dia, Consum, El Corte Inglés, Alcampo, IKEA, and Baleària also concentrate a large part of the supply, featuring varieties like Albacore (117 references), Yellowfin (71 references), Skipjack (27 references), and Bluefin tuna (8 references).

Spain: A Global Power in Sustainable Supply

Spain also plays a relevant role in the global supply. The national fleet contributes nearly 500,000 tons of MSC-certified tuna toward a global total of 3.1 million tons, representing approximately 47% of the world's commercial tuna catch.

In the fishing sector, the AGAC association became the first in the world to certify all six tropical tuna stocks in the Pacific under the MSC standard, accounting for 300,000 tons certified and 45 purse seine vessels globally. Additionally, the first Spanish-French cross-border certification was achieved in the Bay of Biscay, with 181 Spanish boats and 51 French boats dedicated to the artisanal fishing of Albacore.

Consumption Trends and Export Challenges

Tuna consumption in Spain in 2024 was around 110,000 tons (80% canned), a drop of more than 4% compared to 2023 in a complex economic context marked by inflation. Despite this, exports are growing: it is expected that between April 2024 and March 2025, Spanish companies will sell more than 15,000 tons of MSC tuna (+7%), with more than 75% destined for Europe. Frinsa del Noroeste leads these international exports.

Currently, 249 Spanish companies hold an MSC chain of custody. However, only 3% of tuna sold in Spain has the MSC Blue Label, and in preserves, it barely reaches 1.40%. The challenge remains for the fishing sector's commitment to translate into a visible sustainable offering for the consumer, where the role of the supply chain remains key.

AldiDiaConsumEl Corte InglésAlcampoIKEABaleària

AldiDiaConsumEl Corte InglésAlcampoIKEABaleària
