Artisanal sector admits selling hake quota to the industry

Due to the effects of illegal fishing and the loss generated by the interaction with the sea lion, the artisanal sector admitted selling the industry part of the annual hake quota, which would allow them to have resources to support their expenses.

►FRIOSUR is a food company, for human consumption, which was founded in 1985, in Puerto Chacabuco, XI Región, Chile.

The president of the Demersal Trade Association, Juan García, explained that in the Puerto Montt B area, they gave 200 of their assigned 500 tonnes.

He said that a large part of it was acquired by Friosur, which "can be caught using trawling gear. That goes against what we think, but beggars can’t be choosers," he reflected.

He explained that the decision to sell part of that quota came from the fishermen themselves. "We are in a month in which there are many needs to be covered. The leader does not sell quotas, he can not sell a kilo of fish, if he is not authorized by the bases, who have the fishing record and the fishing quota. They are the ones who sign, they are the ones who give up. We perform the management so they can sell," he explained.

He recalled that in 2018 there were more than 60 tonnes of fishing resources that they could not catch because they were decapitalizing, given the loss derived from sea lions’ attacks. "Resources are invested in long-lines. But we are left without work material or fishing. Everything is taken by the sea lion," said Pedro Neiman, president of the Artisanal Fishing Association of Carretera Austral.

The president of the AG Demersales added the effect of illegal fishing. "Some time ago, we opened a sales room in Anáhuac, which we closed today because we are surrounded by illegal fishing. We have dropped all the businesses with Santiago because the illegal fish is cheaper (CLP 1,700) to the Fishing Terminal. So, under this situation, what is left for us to do?"

Consulted if they will continue selling to the industry, García stated that "the idea is not to do it", which would be aided by SERNAPESCA updating, an institution from which he expects "a serious audit, so that we can do our job well".

In Puerto Montt B area, there are 140 registered vessels, but it is estimated that "only half of them are in the water".
