A draft bill that has been submitted for the consideration of the National Assembly seeks to protect tuna and bonito resources by regulating the use of purse seines.
Tuna purse seiner.
The deputy Raul Hernandez, proponent of the project, explains that the initiative´s objective is to apply measures that assist in the short, medium and long term improvement in the conservation of living marine resources and ecosystems in the jurisdictional waters of the Republic of Panama.
To achieve this purpose, it seeks to strengthen the restrictions of commercial fishing by limiting the number of vessels, allowing the activity only for those who have obtained their licenses as of December 31, 2017 and keep them up to date.
In the case of bonito, the deputy stressed that the importance of banning fishing with purse seines is that this species is the main source of food for others with a higher value in the commercial and tourist area of the country, such as the billfish and dolphinfish, among others.
Bonito is a species of tropical surface water, which represents many benefits for fishermen due to its high commercial value.
