• To date, 1 002 388 tons of anchovy have been unloaded, equivalent to 35.98% of the allocated quota
• The amount of juveniles reported with respect to the total captured is 6.47%
IMARPE report notes that oceanographic conditions will continue to keep the juvenile anchovy in the coastal strip, so it recommends adopting relevant conservation measures

The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has announce the end of the the second fishing season 2019 of the anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and longnose anchovy (Anchoa nasus) resource in the north-central zone, in the maritime area between the north end of the maritime domain of Peru and the 16 ° 00'LS, as of this Wednesday, January 15.

The measure was arranged through Ministerial Resolution No. 015-2020-PRODUCE, published in the newspaper El Peruano.

It should be noted that in a preventive manner, and in order to safeguard the sustainability of the anchovy resource, PRODUCE indefinitely suspended anchvy fishing from January 1, 2020, in the area between 08 ° 00'S and 15 ° 00'S (between Nazca and Trujillo), within the first 30 miles of the coast.

To date, the landings of the anchovy amount to 1 002 388 tons, equivalent to 35.98% of the allocated quota. Also, the percentage of juveniles with respect to the total captured is 6.47%, with a mode of 14 cm.

IMARPE report

The report on the “Biological-fishery survey of anchovy in the area between Lobos de Tierra Island and Ilo from January 4 to 12 by BIC Flores, LP Imarpe IV and LP Imarpe V” concludes that oceanographic conditions indicate that Kelvin warm waves in development will continue to keep the juvenile anchovy mostly concentrated in the coastal strip, increasing its catchability, which will generate high interference with fishing operations and frequent mesh.

Kelvin waves and their relationship with the El Niño phenomenon

Likewise, as has happened in other years, the entry of anchovy juveniles for this year is very important, and it is estimated that it will continue in the remainder of the month of January.

In that sense, IMARPE recommends adopting the relevant conservation measures for the conservation of anchovy juveniles, considering the end of the second fishing season.
