Cod prices remain strong on tight global supply and premium demand, while haddock faces a sharp short-term correction after its earlier surge.

Diverging Market Trends Highlight Structural Shift in Iceland’s Whitefish Sector

In Week 6 of 2026 (February 2–8), Iceland’s whitefish market displayed a marked divergence: haddock prices tumbled sharply, while cod remained resilient at historically high levels, with certain categories even posting gains. The contrasting movements underscore differing supply-demand dynamics and market expectations between the two flagship species.

According to data from Reiknistofa Fiskmarkada (RSF), the domestic auction market recorded a significant correction in haddock prices. The composite index for viscous haddock dropped by more than 13% week-on-week, bringing the average price down to approximately ISK 430 per kilogram (US$3.52/kg). This marked the steepest weekly decline in recent months and pushed prices below the level seen during the same period in 2025.

Importantly, the downturn was broad-based across nearly all size categories:

  • 1.6–2.0 kg haddock fell by ISK 74/kg (US$0.61/kg)

  • 1.4–1.6 kg declined by ISK 81/kg (US$0.66/kg)

  • Over 2 kg dropped by ISK 68/kg (US$0.56/kg)

  • Smaller sizes also experienced downward pressure

The synchronized weakness suggests a systemic market correction rather than oversupply in isolated specifications.

The market for headless dirty haddock mirrored the softness, with its price index slipping roughly 10% week-on-week. However, despite the correction, haddock prices remain about 27% higher year-on-year, suggesting the recent decline represents a cyclical pullback rather than a structural collapse.

Cod Market Demonstrates Resilience, Premium Segment Softens

In contrast, the cod market demonstrated notable resilience. The composite cod index edged slightly lower to around ISK 657/kg (US$5.38/kg), still approximately 6% above the same week last year.

Size-segment analysis reveals differentiated performance:

  • 2.0–2.7 kg cod prices remained largely unchanged

  • 2.7–3.5 kg cod prices posted slight gains

  • Cod over 5 kg experienced mild corrections

  • Cod over 8 kg fell by ISK 42/kg (US$0.34/kg) in a single week

The softening in larger fish suggests that top-tier pricing may have peaked after reaching exceptionally strong levels earlier in the season.

Stronger momentum was observed in the headless and gutted cod segment. Supported by increased deep-sea fishing trips and a higher share of large fish in landings, prices rose by ISK 34/kg (US$0.28/kg) week-on-week. Cod weighing over 5 kg continued to command a substantial premium, with current prices approximately 19% higher year-on-year, making it the whitefish species with the strongest annual growth in Iceland’s auction system.

Broader Whitefish Market Faces Weak Sentiment

The broader whitefish category showed signs of weakness during the same week. Redfish prices dropped sharply despite relatively high trading volumes, recording a year-on-year decline exceeding 44%. Meanwhile, saithe prices edged lower but remain significantly above last year’s levels.

Structural Rebalancing Underway

The latest auction data point to a structural rebalancing in Iceland’s whitefish market. Cod continues to draw support from tight global supply and sustained premium demand, maintaining its price strength. In contrast, haddock is undergoing a pronounced short-term correction following an earlier surge.

For processors and traders, the widening price and margin gap between cod and non-cod species highlights the growing importance of raw material mix and size specification strategy. Market participants broadly expect that this divergence is unlikely to narrow in the near term.

  • 1.6~2.0kgISK 74/kg(US$0.61/kg)下落

  • 1.4~1.6kgISK 81/kg(US$0.66/kg)下落

  • 2kg超ISK 68/kg(US$0.56/kg)下落

  • 8kg超ISK 42/kg(US$0.34/kg)下落

  • 1.6–2.0公斤下跌ISK 74/kg(US$0.61/kg)

  • 1.4–1.6公斤下跌ISK 81/kg(US$0.66/kg)

  • 2公斤以上下跌ISK 68/kg(US$0.56/kg)

  • 8公斤以上单周下跌ISK 42/kg(US$0.34/kg)
