The scientific vessel Abate Molina, from the Institute of Fisheries Development (IFOP) of Chile, is developing the “MOBIO-MPH 2019” cruise, associated with the project “Bio-oceanographic conditions and evaluation of the anchovy spawning stock between the regions of Arica and Antofagasta, year 2019”.
The execution of the cruise, which began on September 14 and will end on Saturday, October 19, is in the hands of the IFOP's Department of Oceanography and Environment and the project manager is the oceanographer Jessica Bonicelli.
The main objectives of the cruise, within the framework of the advice provided by IFFOP to the Undersecretariat of Fisheries of Chile, are the oceanographic monitoring and sampling of anchovy eggs to carry out the evaluation of the spawning stock of this resource. During this period, the 14 researchers and embarked technicians will perform sampling of ichthyoplankton, zoo and phyto plankton, nutrients and isotopes, acoustic studies of small pelagics, physical oceanography and cetacean observation.
This cruise, in its oceanographic phase, is part of the XXII Joint Regional Cruise, and for this reason scientific vessels of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru are also deployed simultaneously in their respective seas.
The objective of the Permanent Commission of the South Pacific (CPPS) for this joint cruise is to document the variability of the properties of the ocean and the adjacent atmosphere in the Southeast Pacific, in the months of September-October 2019. This results in monitoring of the oceanographic conditions of an extensive maritime area within the study framework of "El Niño", a regional process that was presented in its warm phase until last July; and current ocean-atmospheric conditions are neutral.
