The binational decision between Argentina and Uruguay sets in motion a strategic fishing season, backed by scientific data and strong expectations for the sector in 2026.

As of April 1, 2026, directed fishing for squid (Illex argentinus) has been officially authorized in the Common Fishing Zone, a shared area between Argentina and Uruguay. The measure, formalized through Resolution 2/2026, marks the beginning of one of the most relevant campaigns for the fishing industry in the Southwest Atlantic.

The decision was adopted by the Joint Technical Commission of the Maritime Front (CTMFM), the binational body responsible for regulating the exploitation of fishery resources under the framework of the Treaty of the Río de la Plata and its Maritime Front. According to the official text, the opening is based on scientific assessments confirming the presence of the resource in the area and on the “convenience of initiating the period of directed fishing.”

Nautical chart of the CTMFM zone

Article 1 of the resolution explicitly establishes the authorization of the fishing activity, while subsequent articles provide for its formal communication to the foreign affairs authorities of both countries — the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship of the Argentine Republic and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay — as well as its publication in Argentina’s Official Gazette and Uruguay’s Official Gazette, in compliance with legal procedures.

The resolution bears the signatures of delegates Luis Eugenio Bellando and Álvaro Fernández González, representatives of the CTMFM, reinforcing the joint management framework based on technical criteria and sustainability.

A strategic resource with strong economic impact

Illex argentinus is one of the most commercially significant species in the region, both for its role in exports and its impact on port and industrial activity. The opening of the season is therefore a key moment in the sector’s annual planning.

During the previous fishing cycle, catch levels showed notable parity between the two countries:

  • Argentina: 5,270 tons landed, with peak activity between April and June.
  • Uruguay: 5,538 tons, with a similar operational intensity during the same period.

These figures support positive expectations for the 2026 season, as the jigging and trawling fleets prepare to intensify operations in the coming weeks.

Biological window and sustainable management

The opening of the season follows the biological and seasonal pattern of the species. The highest availability of squid typically occurs in the second quarter of the year, when migration leads to higher concentrations in the Common Fishing Zone.

However, this is a relatively short window. For that reason, the adopted management scheme seeks to balance economic use with stock sustainability, under constant monitoring by authorities.

The Río Solís IV is a Uruguayan vessel, built in 1987, with its home port in Montevideo, and is part of the Pesquerías Belnova fleet.

The authorization comes within a context of ongoing scientific oversight, which is essential for defining opening periods and exploitation conditions based on the population dynamics of the resource. In this way, the CTMFM continues to regulate one of the region’s main fisheries in accordance with existing bilateral agreements and technical criteria.

With the formal start of the season, ports in both countries — particularly along the Argentine and Uruguayan coasts — are preparing for a fishing campaign that once again will play a significant role in regional fishing activity.

Illex argentinus

Illex argentinus
