Southern bluefin tuna (Thunnus maccoyii)

The average CIF price of fresh bluefin imported by Japan in April was JPY 2,049/kg, 7% higher than last month and 3% higher than April 2018. In the first four-month period of the year it averages JPY 1,877/kg, 9% more than in the same period of the previous year.

The main suppliers in the month were Mexico, with 311 tonnes at JPY 2,141/kg and New Xealand, with 82 tonnes at JPY 1,806

In April, about 449 tonnes of fresh bluefin were imported, worth JPY 920 million at Japan Customs.

These figures are down 14% in volume and 9% in value on those registered in the previous month. Compared with April 2018, imports they are down 6% in volume and 4% in value.

In the first four-month period of the year 1,912 tonnes were imported for JPY 3,588 million, 3% more in volume and 10% in value than in the same period last year.

The main supplier of northern bluefin (Thunnus thynnus and/or Thunnus orientalis) was Mexico during the period, with 1,347 tonnes and JPY 2,789 million.

The main origin of fresh southern bluefin was New Zealand, 136 tons for JPY 254 million.
