Tilapia is one of the fish species produced in the Mexican aquaculture farms having greater consumption and popularity, and it represents a food solution for the population of Mexico
So much is the popularity of this fish that 5 out of 10 aquaculture farms in Mexico produce tilapia, that is, a total of 4,634 of the 9,230 that operate in the 32 states of the country, which together grow 117,806 tonnes inland.
According to the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA), 70 per cent of the national volume is provided by five states of the country. Chiapas ranks first with 28,782 tonnes, followed closely by Jalisco with 27,739 tonnes. Further behind Michoacan (9,663.14 tonnes), Veracruz (8,762 tonnes) and Sinaloa (8,285 tonnes) are located.
In the world context, Mexico ranks ninth among the largest producers of tilapia, a list that is led by China with a production of almost 1.7 million tonnes, 28.4 per cent of the world’s aquaculture production of this fish.
Tilapia, also known as mojarra by Mexicans, is mostly marketed domestically. Although this product has also been imported to meet the demand, Mexican exports have been increasing, and 4,130 tonnes have been sold abroad for USD 31.9 million.
