The first anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and longnose anchovy (Anchoa nasus) fishing season in 2017 in the central and northern areas of the Peruvian coast will begin on Saturday April 22, with a catch quota of 2.8 million tonnes.

The quota allocated for this year, as recommended by Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE), is 55.5 per cent higher than the one set for the same season last year, which was 1.8 million tonnes.

"We have the satisfaction of having found an important level of biomass that confirms that we are doing things well. We are leaving just over 6 million tonnes at sea, a far higher number than normal for the fishing activity to be sustainable," said Production Ministry head Bruno Giuffra.

The minister stressed that his office is respecting all the parameters established for a responsible activity for the benefit of the country and the resource.

"We will have a very good fishing season on this opportunity and we will make sure the resource is enough for the following seasons," he said.

He also made a call to respect, as it is being done successfully at present, the closure of areas where the presence of juveniles is detected.

The Supreme Decree that will formally start the First Fishing Season 2017 in the central and northern zone will be published this Friday in the official newspaper El Peruano.
