The Mexican tuna fleet has not yet completed the catch quota for bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) established by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) for Mexico.
According to the subdelegate of the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA), Óscar Humberto Baylón Greco, the national fleet had captured around 2,200 tonnes until last Wednesday, below the authorized 3,000 tonnes.
The official released this data generated by CONAPESCA following reports that the IATT establish that on May 5, the tuna capture in Mexico exceeded 2,600 metric tons (Reference 0207-410), El Vigía reported.
Baylón Greco clarified that the the IATTC data are taken into account by the CONAPESCA when they become official through the formal channels.
"Without being an official fact, (the catch) is between 2,000 and 2,300 tonnes," he stressed.
