A technical report by INIDEP details that between 10 and 31 January, jigger vessels captured 21,906 tonnes of squid (Illex argentinus), with a daily average per unit of around 35 tonnes.
The information comes from the weekly fishing reports reported by 47 vessels, many of which are now closing the second tide of the season south of 44° S parallel with the expectation of sustaining the level of catches, Pescare reported.
Like squid jiggers, trawlers are also reporting good catches.
In addition, the fishing reports indicate that an improvement in the size of the specimens is being observed, although sizes S and double SS still predominate, and some M.
The 2017 Illex squid season closed with a total catch of 98,965.5 tonnes, of which the national squid jiggers contributed 86,498.5 tonnes and the trawlers, 10,374.7 tonnes.
