The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE), as part of the country's strategy to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in the Peruvian sea, will put into operation a virtual platform in the second quarter to share information among countries members of FAO's network against illegal fishing in Latin America and the Caribbean.
This virtual platform seeks to be a tool that contributes to combat, prevent and thwart fishing crime, which goes hand in hand with other crime that include the illegal acquisition of permits for money laundering, kidnapping, drug trafficking and human trafficking, explained general director of Supervision, Surveillance and Control of the Ministry of Production José Romero Glenny.
"The platform along with other actions make it possible for our country to lead the fight against illegal fishing in the region. Illegal fishing has serious repercussions for the sustainability and daily sustenance of thousands of fishermen who experience the adverse effects of overfishing practised by ships that operate outside the law, so it is a priority issue for the current management," he added.
It should be noted that Peru, since the end of 2017, has been the technical secretariat of FAO's network for the exchange of information and experiences among countries of Latin America and the Caribbean against illegal fishing. This network is the first in the region that seeks to deal with illegality, preventing fishing vessels registered in the illegal fishing list from entering the port to carry out provisioning activities, repairs or fish landings.
The Peruvian entities that currently belong to the network and that will have access to the information of the platform in a first stage are the Ministry of Production, the Navy of Peru, the National Port Authority, SUNAT and the Ministry of Foreign Relations.
On the other hand, as part of the capacity building strategy, the international seminar on "Training on High Risk Vessels for Fishery Investigators" is being held in Lima, organized by PRODUCE and the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
This seminar aims to learn about the latest tools that Interpol uses to combat illegal fishing, with the participation of government representatives from Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia, Argentina and Uruguay.
