The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) expects that a new centre specialising in tilapia breeding, built with aid from the government of China Taiwan, sets the foundations for a more profitable and sustainable production.
The new facility, called Tilapia Reproducer Maintenance Centre, was opened by the MAG through the Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Centre (CENDEPESCA) as part of the "Project for the Promotion of Family Aquaculture Development in poor towns in El Salvador."
The new centre is within CENDEPESCA Aquaculture Station, located in zone n° 2 of South Atiocoyo Irrigation District, San Pablo Tacachico, department of La Libertad.
It has 15 concrete piles with water supply obtained through gravity and pumping and two ponds being 500 m² each and a 54 metre long greenhouse, 22 metres wide and 4 metres high to protect farmed specimens from predators.
The Salvadoran government expects the "Family Aquaculture Development Project in poor towns in El Salvador" will benefit some 1,200 families, and contribute to promoting sustainable aquaculture development and improve producers’ income from aquaculture production sale.
This initiative, which began in January 2015 and will last until December 2018, seeks to increase production to 2.5 million hybrid tilapia fingerlings per year in order to meet the supply to beneficiaries in the regions.
In addition, the Government intends to transfer technology for crossing tilapia pure lines to private producers, with the aim of making fingerlings available to fish farmers in the country’s remote areas having extreme poverty.
