European Commission Launches Key Survey on Ocean Observation Technologies

EUROPEAN UNION
Monday, August 03, 2026, 01:00 (GMT + 9)

The EU executive aims to secure 35% of the global ocean technology market by 2035 and invites industry stakeholders to contribute to a strategic survey by 15 September.

The European Commission has launched a public consultation targeted at companies and organisations in the ocean observation technology sector to assess the competitiveness, structure, and challenges of the industry compared with international competitors. The initiative forms part of a broader study on the competitiveness of the European Union's sustainable blue economy sector, with a primary focus on marine observation technologies.

Although the ocean covers 70% of the Earth's surface, only 5% has been explored and mapped to date. To address this gap, the European Union is advancing the OceanEye initiative under the framework of the European Ocean Pact to drive marine research, knowledge, and innovation. Through this strategy, the European Union aims to become a global leader in ocean observation technology and achieve a 35% share of the global ocean technology market by 2035.

The survey is open to businesses and organizations across the entire ocean observation value chain within the European Union. Target respondents include sensor and instrument manufacturers, autonomous platform and marine robotics developers, data and analytics service providers, software developers, systems integrators, and other specialized technology providers. Completing the survey takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes, and the deadline for submission is 15 September.

The collected data will enable EU institutions to establish an accurate diagnostic of Europe’s industrial strengths and innovation potential. Furthermore, the input will inform the European Commission’s analysis supporting the implementation of the OceanEye initiative, ensuring that future public policies, funding programmes, and support measures align with the practical realities of the sector. Participating entities will receive a summary of the aggregated findings and may be selected for featured case studies showcasing leading European enterprises.
