Looks Good! Shrimp Survey in Chubut Yields Satisfactory Biological Indicators in the Northern Zone

The Survey Concludes Yesterday in Provincial Waters with a Predominance of L2 and L1 Sizes and Low Hake Levels.

The shrimp (langostino) survey in the waters of Chubut province concludes this Monday, November 3, after three effective days of fishing. The results of the survey are deemed satisfactory in the Northern Zone, according to Revista Puerto, which highlights the finding of shrimp with a firm shell and consistent meat.

Operations and Fleet

A total of twenty boats participated in the survey ordered by the enforcement authority. Operations were interrupted on Saturday due to prevailing wind conditions.

• On Friday, the Yellow Fleet was divided: eight boats in the Southern Zone and another eight in the Northern Zone, where four artisanal boats were also permitted to enter.

• The boats concentrated their efforts in the Northern Zone following the negative results in the south.

Results by Zone

Southern Zone (44°00′ LS and 44°56′ LS)

As anticipated for this time of year, the results in the Southern Zone were negative. Exploratory fishing tasks were carried out as planned for a single day, and the hauls were null with the presence of juvenile fish. These vessels subsequently joined the fleet operating in the north.

Northern Zone (43°00′ LS and 44°00′ LS)

Operations in the Northern Zone showed positive indicators:

• Dominant Sizes: Boats reported a predominance of sizes L2 (at 60%) and L1 (at 30%).

• Quality: The shrimp found is consistent and has a firm shell, meeting the desired organoleptic characteristics, as reported by Revista Puerto.

• Bycatch: The shrimp was found with low percentages of hake, especially after the boats moved further north on Sunday, where they found cleaner catches without bycatch.

• Yields: Yields were mixed on the first day; while some boats caught more than 500 boxes and completed their hold capacity, others were between 70% and some at 50% capacity.

Next Steps

In general terms, the survey is positive in the northern sector. Once the final data from today is obtained, the enforcement authority will decide whether the biological parameters are met to enable the entry of the commercial fleet. Everything seems to indicate that this opening could occur in the area comprised between parallels 43°00′ LS and 44°00′ LS.
