The National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission (CONAPESCA) and the Government of Tamaulipas signed an agreement to strengthen inspection and surveillance activities in the fishing and aquaculture areas of this state, whose production is around 43,000 tonnes per year.
Fisheries and Aquaculture Secretary of Tamaulipas, Saul Ruiz Villegas, informed that this agreement will make it possible to carry out surveillance tasks in rivers, lagoons and dams of the entity where several species of commercial interest are produced. From the state government, it will collaborate in the activities of the federal inspectors in Laguna Madre.
He explained that the state of Tamaulipas has an important hydraulic infrastructure such as Marte R. Gómez dam (located in the San Juan river bed in the town of Camargo) and the Vicente Guerrero (in the town of Padilla), which besides generating food guarantee the supply of water for irrigation systems.
Based on this agreement, production areas will also be covered, since Tamaulipas has rivers and lagoons and a freshwater surface of around 180,000 hectares.
Tamaulipas mainly produces shrimp, crab, oyster, shark, red snapper, mullet and lebrancha, among other species that are distributed in large consumption centres, such as Mexico City.
Regarding the agreement signed by the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commissioner, Mario Aguilar Sánchez, Ruiz Villegas said it is very important because Tamaulipas will be able to control inspection and surveillance much better, even with the support of state government personnel, and strengthen this task to avoid illegal activities.
