General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean to open subregional office in Fuengirola

The General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) will have a sub-regional office for the Western Mediterranean that will be located in the Oceanographic Center of Malaga (C.O. Málaga), in Fuengirola.
In order to finish the agreement details by which the office will be established, a meeting was held on January 11 at the Oceanographic Center of Malaga, in which the executive secretary of the GFCM, Abdellah Srour; the director of the Institute of Spanish of Oceanography (IEO), Eduardo Balguerías; the Secretary General of Fisheries, Alberto Manuel López-Asenjo; Miguel Bernal (CGPM), Jorge Baro (director of COMálaga) and Encarnación de Benito (SGP) participated.
The implementation of this office is in line with the objectives of the GFCM, which is committed to strengthening its work at the subregional level, taking into account the specificities of the fisheries in each area of the Mediterranean. It will also strengthen relations with the host country, will allow a better evaluation of concrete activities in each subregion, all in close coordination with the activities of the FAO regional fisheries cooperation projects, as reported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment.
In the meeting, a work plan was agreed by which a series of technical meetings will be organized that will culminate with the organization in Spain of an event to commemorate the International Day against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU), which will have the participation of the Executive Secretary of the GFCM.
In addition, progress was made in some of the topics that will be the object of study in the technical meetings that will take place in the coming months, both in Fuengirola and in Madrid, and it was agreed to open a line of work on social protection and gender equality in the area of the fisheries sector, whose conclusions will be presented in December at a meeting to be held at FAO headquarters in Rome.
