Vietnam has filed a complaint to the World Trade Organization (WTO) for the anti-dumping duties imposed by the United States on its exports of fish fillets.
The Vietnamese government maintains that Washington has violated WTO rules by imposing unfair punitive tariffs on its products, arguing that Vietnamese fish is sold at an unfairly low price in the US market.
Vietnam is the third largest supplier of fish fillets to the United States, after Chile and China. Imports of Vietnamese fish fillets from the US increased from USD 100 million in 2007 to more than USD 520 million in 2016.
The US authorities now have a period of 60 days to solve the claim. Otherwise, Vietnam could ask the WTO to take a decision on it.
This complaint is the fourth filed by Vietnam since it joined the WTO in 2007. Two of the previous complaints were related to anti-dumping tariffs applied by the US. to the Vietnamese shrimp. This dispute ended in 2016 with a US agreement to eliminate tariffs applied to a Vietnamese shrimp exporter and refund what he had paid.
