A joint oceanographic study conducted by Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Chile confirmed normal conditions in the equatorial zone and the cooling of the sea off Peru and Chile.
The Joint Regional Oceanographic Research Survey in the Southeast Pacific is an initiative of the program "Regional Study of El Niño Phenomenon" of the Permanent Commission of the South Pacific (PCSP) that, since 1998, monitors the properties of the ocean and the adjacent atmosphere in front of the Western coasts of South America in order to anticipate the presence of conditions El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
On the last survey, which took place from September 15 to November 9, 2017, 1054 oceanographic stations were made from the coast of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Chile to the Galapagos Islands.
This action was possible due to the joint action carried out by oceanographic institutions of the region such as the Center for Oceanographic and Hydrographic Research of the Pacific (CCCP) of the General Maritime Directorate (DIMAR) of Colombia, the Oceanographic Institute of the Navy (Inocar) of the Ecuador, the Institute of the Sea of Peru (IMARPE) and the Institute of Fisheries Promotion (IFOP) of Chile, and their scientific vessels.
The results of the XX Regional Oceanographic Surveyconfirmed the end of a warm condition in winter 2017 and the beginning of a neutral scenario in the equatorial region (Colombia and Ecuador), as well as the prevalence of cold conditions from mild to intense in the Peruvian and Chilean sea.
Considering the current forecast of the climate models of international agencies indicating cold conditions of weak magnitude until the end of the year for the central equatorial Pacific (Niño Region 3.4) and neutral conditions in December 2017 for the eastern sector (Niño 1 + 2 Region) ), as well as the results of the XX Joint Regional Survey, it is expected that in the summer of 2017 - 2018 a normal to slightly cold scenario will occur that may reach a weak La Niña condition in the Southeast Pacific.
Dr. Jaime Letelier Pino, head of the department of oceanography and environment of the IFOP, stressed that "this multinational instance allows the joint collaboration of researchers from the most important institutions of each country related to oceanographic-fisheries research through joint meetings in different countries and exchange of researchers on the surveys. "
The results of El Niño Monitoring can be found on the CPPS website and in the monthly IFOP bulletins.
