A bitcoin mining operation with a greenhouse and fish farm, located in St. Francois Xavier, is developing an ambitious program on sustainable food systems, the Bitcoinist informed.
The company´s owner, Bruce Hardy, explains that the heat produced by the bitcoin mining system can be used to warm greenhouses and the water of aquaculture tanks. In addition, the wastewater from the tanks are rich in nitrates and are ideal for the growth of plants and can then be used to water crops.
“When the bitcoins came, they were an excellent proxy for what a server could do in terms of emulating heat, and whether we could use that heat for agricultural purposes”, Hardy said in an interview with CBC News.
The company is located in Manitoba, Canada, a low-cost energy area, which also generates a great amount of hydro-electrical power, factors that make the region a key spot for cryptocurrency mining.
