Authorities of the Vice Ministry of Aquaculture and Fisheries and of the National Fisheries Institute (INP) met with the stakeholders of small pelagic fish fishery value chain in order to review the scientific report on the reproductive behavior of the species and estabish the closure periods for 2019.
After the analysis of the investigations, it was determined that the order of the first cycle will be in effect from February 17 to March 25 this year, while the second will continue from October 1 to November 30.
Within these closures all small pelagic species are included, including the "chuhueco" of Pacific anchoveta (Cetengraulis mysticetus), suppressing the previous periods that governed it.
In addition, as a strategy for survival and adaptation to the pressure of fishing and environmental changes, the actors involved must meet a minimum catch size, listed according to the main species of small pelagic fish.
The fishing bans allow to protect the spawning stock and guarantee the entry of new individuals into an exploitable biomass.
