Galician fleet prepares to start squid fishing in Falklands

The Galician fleet that works in Falkland waters is already preparing to leave for the South Atlantic fishing ground, before the next opening of Loligo squid fishery.

This year's season will begin on February 24, and with good prospects for ship owners so far, according to the first scientific reports.

Some Galician vessels, as part of the Pereira fleet, have already left for the South Atlantic, while Pescapuerta, Chymar and Marfrío vessels still remain on local docks, to carry out repairs or supplies, reported Faro de Vigo.

The squid catches can suffer great variations from one year to the other. Although shipowners consider a season with catches of around 40,000 tonnes as good, in the last three years the figure was far exceeded. Last year, they even surpassed the record record of 1995, capturing a total of 78,913 tonnes, almost 25 percent more than in 2017.

The season is divided into two parts, of which the first one is usually the one that makes the difference, according to the Galician shipowners.
