Seafood exports to Taiwan grow

The value of Nicaraguan seafood exports to Taiwan increased more than 21 percent last year to USD 69 million, compared to USD 57 million in 2017, according to figures from Taiwan Customs.
Shrimp sales grew by 9.2 percent year-on-year to USD 50 million, while those of sea cucumber increased by 101 percent, reaching a value of USD 9.9 million.
Another relevant product was lobster, whose exports to Taiwan generated USD USD 9.3 million, 45 percent more than in 2017.

According to the head of the Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture (INPESCA), Edward Jackson, Nicaragua's fishing and aquaculture production in 2018reached 121 million pounds, 16 percent more than in the previous year.
Farmed shrimp accounted for 54 percent of production, with 67 million pounds, with sea cucumber and lobster, among other species, also standing out.
Last year, Nicaragua exported 78 million pounds of fishery and aquaculture products, 15 percent more than 2017, for more than USD 307 million, an increase of 12 percent compared to USD 273 million registered in 2017.
The United States, France and Taiwan continue to be the main markets for Nicaraguan fishery and aquaculture products.
